US Sailing National Sail Training Symposium, Report #1 -Reply

DAVIS JONES (JONES.DAVIS@epamail.epa.gov)

Roy,
I'm glad that US Sailing and BSA seem to be formalizing things a bit, and that you
are keeping us updated on the meeting. I got my US Sailing Keelboat instructor
certification through the BSA/Olympic Committee grant two years ago, and found
the experience challenging and fulfilling. One question that remains, however, is
whether and how I (or other Sea Scouters) can certify that the youth and/or adults I
teach the Keelboat course have meet the US Sailing standards. According to the
literature and my instructors at the course, the certification could only be given
through a US Sailing approved sailing school. Does an individual Sea Scout Ship
qualify for such status? Or, does BSA / Sea Scouting hold that approval for us all?
I know there are many others of you that hold the instructor certification. How have
you handled giving out certificates of completion?
