[This is a little dated, but I still think it is a worthy item to repost.
Accompanying the original is a photograph of Anne sailing in a small boat
that takes up much of the page. This is the kind of media exposure I like
to see!]

By Sheri Graves
Staff Writer
School: '98 Graduate, Healdsburg High
Personal: Born Aug. 4, 1980, in San Mateo, she'll be 18 next week. She
lives in Windsor with her parents, Myron and Margaret Guilford, and her
brother, James, 13, a fall student at Windsor Middle School. Her
half-brother, Lonny Guilford, 28, lives in Denver, Colo.
Pets: ``I have a dog and four fish.''
Claim to fame: ``I've been in Sea Scouts almost six years. It's a branch of
the Boy Scouts. I was a boatswain for two years with Unit S.E.S. Orion 132.
I'm a junior officer now. I command a crew of other Sea Scouts on a variety
of boats in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Cotati. We sail our little sailboats on
Spring Lake and Lake Sonoma. Our larger boats we take to San Francisco Bay,
San Pablo Bay, the Sacramento Delta and the Petaluma River. We do service
projects in the community and have regattas (competitions) in the spring.
I'm a member of the Youth Advisory Committee as well as the Adult Advisory
Committee. Right now, I'm doing a project through Sea Scouts that involves
restoring a Cal 20, a racing sailboat. I'm doing this for my Quartermaster
rank, which is the equivalent to the Boy Scouts' Eagle.''
The thing I like about Sea Scouts is: ``It improved my self-confidence a
lot. It teaches teamwork and leadership. There's an incredible variety of
opportunities and learning experiences available through Sea Scouts.''
School activities: ``I took Advance Placement classes. Through my French
class, I went to a second-grade classroom once a week to speak to the kids
in French and help them learn the language. I was in the Peer Helping
program for a year.''
Awards: ``On Golden State Exams, I received honors in geometry, U.S.
history and civics. I received GSE school recognition in biology and
English. I was a finalist in The Press Democrat Youth Service Award for
English and literature. I received the Bank of America Achievement Award
for English, and I've been on both the school honor roll and the
Superintendent's honor roll. Through Sea
Scouts, I became a U.S. Power Squadron Apprentice, which means I passed the
classes in boating safety and skills offered by the Redwood Power Squadron.
I also achieved my Ordinary Rank in Sea Scouts [Anne told them Able -CKS].
I received a Doyle Scholarship but won't be using it because I'm not going
to Santa Rosa Junior College.''
Community activities: ``I'm a member of the Church of the Incarnation,
Episcopal, and I've helped with fund-raisers so the youth group could go to
Mexico and help build houses for impoverished people.''
Employment: ``I've been working for the Sonoma County YMCA more than two
years. I'm a certified lifeguard and I have a First Response certificate.''
=46avorite kind of music: ``I really like ska and swing. They're really
upbeat. Since ska has started becoming more mainstream, I've gotten
involved with a small community of people who go to hear these bands. When
you go to the shows, even if you don't know the people, they're friendly
and very nice. I really like the Mad Caddies from the Bay Area. Locally, I
like Tin Circus.''
Pet peeve: ``People who don't see beyond themselves, who are self-centered
and self-focused. They don't consider how what they do affects other
people.''
I would describe myself as: ``Very stubborn. I'm caring and also
questioning. I do a lot of exploring of ideas.''
Goals: ``I'm going to Sonoma State University in the fall. I haven't
decided on a major yet, probably communications and English. For a career,
I'd like to do something with writing or journalism.''
Advice to teens: ``Hold your ground. Don't let people push you around.''
