PROGRAMME:
In the last decade we are witnesses of growing pollution which destroys=20
nature. Sea is not an exemption. Adriatic sea is one of the hidden=20
corners of the Earth where pollution did not damaged marine life. We are=20
trying to keep it clean, so we started an environment protection project=20
to lead the public efforts to protect the sea. Our main goal is to=20
inform public about the sea pollution and main problems of growing=20
industrialisation, but also to raise the level of conscious about=20
environment problems among scouts. Our project includes research and=20
action (cleaning of beaches from garbage, cleaning of sea from some=20
animal species and poison seaweed and their products). The project was=20
made in accordance with the University of Zagreb, and Institute for=20
Oceanographic Research. Ecology students and engineers lead the=20
scientific part of the programme.=20
The Sea scout centre "Veruda" is situated on the beautiful island of=20
"Veruda" near the city of Pula, on the southernmost spot of Istria, well=20
known for beautiful Adriatic coast. Campsite is completely covered by=20
pine forest, and there are lot of beautiful beaches on and around=20
island. Scout marine watch (started in 1997) is a project for marine=20
life protection. Scouts can join in numerous work groups working on=20
different fields of ecology and biology: 1. Chemical and biological=20
analysis of sea water - scouts collect water samples and they determine=20
the level of pollution. 2. Identification and measurement of population=20
of living species in the sea and on the beach - in this way we can=20
obtain results of impacts of pollution on living species. 3.=20
Identification and measurement of population of herbs, trees, insects,=20
seagulls. 4. Measurement of sea and air temperature, air pressure, sea=20
visibility, wind velocity. 5. Making of water filter, desalinisation of=20
sea water. The results are usually published in nature and ecology=20
magazines.=20
The second topic of the project is exploration and discovery of Istrian=20
villages, inheritage and history. Through lot of hikes scout will become=20
familiar with the lifestyle, national music and dances. They will visit=20
old towns, villages, castles, parks of nature, mountains, the city of=20
Pula with lot of Roman monuments. Also there will adventure: canoeing=20
and rafting, cruising, scuba diving, horse riding, swimming, sailing,=20
orienteering, topography, chart making, knots, tent pitching,=20
signalisation (Morse), astronomy, sport games (soccer, volleyball,=20
scoutball, waterpolo, hockey), woodwork, pioneering. Instructors will=20
lead groups to learn national and modern dances. Scouts will learn how=20
to survive in nature and they will try to do it practically during=20
two-day surviving on a deserted island collecting food from nature and=20
building a shelter.
Sea scout group "Uljanik" from Pula (Croatia) is organising the second=20
ecology scout camp in a scout centre on the Island of Veruda.=20
The project is included in "Project Eurosteps", organised by European=20
Scout Bureau, and it has also become a member of SCENES, project=20
organised by WOSM (Scout Centres of Excellence for Nature and=20
Environment) and a part of Croatian national scouting program for the=20
next year. We are also doing this project in association with REC=20
(Regional Environment Centres for Eastern Europe).
