Ahoy all,
I took the opportunity to drive out of the mountains, down to Atlanta a couple
of weeks ago for their Scout Show. To begin with, for those of you unaware of
the Atlanta Area Council, they are currently claiming 72K+ Scouts, plus
adults. I believe there were about 50K in attendance. The Scouting Spirit
was tremendous. All that being said, that was not my high point.
I wore my regular Scout khakis and blended fairly well. I used to live there
so I renewed many old friendships. I noticed a large sail boat in one corner
and figured that it must be their Sea Scout display. In fact there were two
Ships represented, sorry I missed both numbers. Just as I walked up a
gentleman was asking three uniformed youth about Sea Exploring. They all
three chimed in with a very polite response that it was now Sea Scouts, a part
of Venturing. The gentleman asked a half a dozen or more questions concerning
the new names, the impact on Scouting and other related items. There were no
other adults present - I stress this. All three of those youth knew, without
reference to any materials, all of the answers. They did not hesitate, they
did not give an incorrect response, they did not give a partial response. A
fine job done by them, and obviously by their leaders during the transition.
Yours in Scouting,
