I note with great interest that Martin Flynn has sweetened the pot with a copy
of Chapman's and Dave Alcantara has done the same with Bowditch's. Welcome
generosity indeed. Is there more booty out there to be had? A jewel
encrusted, hand bound copy of Rousmaniere's Annapolis Seamanship? A medieval
rutter or codex? (Realize that we are confident.)
It seems that we could use an impartial judge or two. Not that a Sea Scout
would ever stoop to anything unethical, but I am fond of that ad, "I love you,
baby, now cut the cards." I did after all see that movie, The Big Easy.
Surely there is a neutral commodore or two, maybe even a skipper, mate, or
committee member who can read/rhyme/assign numbers (perhaps as high as three.)
I recall there is a leader on the net from the Emerald Isle, the source of a
good poet or two, and the place that saved the written word from destruction
by the Vikings (hmm, maybe not so impartial).
At present the hats in the ring (official responses to the challenge), as I
count them, are from:
Ship 1 Slidell, LA
Ship 1 Virginia Beach, VA
Ship 101 Stratford, CT
Am I right? Could it be that the number 1 has a psychological effect related
to confidence? or is digitalized e-mail only for those Ships with binary
numbers? Surely we shall hear from the Midwest and far West.
A log entry contest was announced to Sea Scouts, domestic or foreigner
"With prizes beyond compare" observed the local coroner
The excitement grew great
As stalwart Sea Scouts did create
Log entries that rivaled the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner
We'll get better with practice. We've got almost two months.
