Ahoy!
Challenge accepted by the pirate SSS of the Chesapeake Bay, "Billy
Bones". Stand by to have yer nautical senses blown from d water ! This will
be fun sport, matey, getting anyone out of bed on January 1st, 1999 ! And ya
can join us for our January 1st sail and scuba dive in 38 degree water on=
one
of Virginias wrecks. A 10 year tradition that absolutely guarantees that all
concerned are totally insane !=20

On a less fortunate note, and as an active member of the US Coast Guard
Auxiliary where I am crew qualified on a rescue boat(41ft) I want to inform
you all about the dangers of over loading. This past week-end 4 fishermen
wanted
to go striper fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. Their boat is a C-Hawk 16. The
best life saving feature was a Uniden VHF radio, and flares, and type 2 life
jackets. Now think that this boat, can only hold 1050 pounds including=
motor,
fuel. Now picture them running 12 miles off shore and a cold front coming=
in.
Think about being in calm seas and moments later being in 3 to 4 foot
running=D03cfcb99cc939a33885f86/button.cgi,D
seas with white caps. Since this boat didn't have a stern well guard, it was
of course, taking on water rapidily.
When the owner radioed for help , he gave the wrong information, causing
considerable delay. He informed the group ( USCG ) that he was in a channel
near Hampton, when in fact he was 25 miles away in another channel. A=
passing
tug spotted the 4 men, but a tug and barge cann't stop , so the Little=
Creek
Station was called. Meanwhile, a helicopter was in route from NC, and 2=
rescue
boats were in route from 2 seperate directions. The men were located,=
sitting
on top of the over turned vessel , in 55 degreewater with 20 knots of wind.
Think they were cold? The high light of this is don't go out with out filing=
a
float plan, know your limits and your boat, watch the weather channel, in=
cold
water bring survival suits and equipment suited for your area of operations,
and if in doubt, stay home. And if you get scared, go home. No shame to live
another day.
Take a USCGA basic course n motorboating and sailing, and navigation.
They are free, except for a few dollars for the books. And you could get a
reduction in insurance too. Boat US gives discounts to members of the
Auxiliary. And think of the knowledge you can bring to yer ship !
I just love it when my daughter and Bosun mate, tells me that I=
screwed
up piloting out of the sound onto the bay. Now did I go inside or outside=
the
chanel piling? Keep'em guessing!
