Changes in Exploring - Forwarded

"If you want results you've got to ADVERTISE"!!!! Scouting in general is
not well advertised and exploring is even worse sea exploring is a complete
secret.
Anything that will advance our cause is good, but if no one knows about it,
what's the point? What is in a name ... a rose by any other name.... no
knows that we've even got roses. Scouting is a bit of an enigma.....one of
my scouts once said "no one doesn't like the Boy Scouts".....so how come
there aren't waiting lists to join some of the most incredible youth
programs on the planet. When I was in scouts as a kid it was not the 'cool'
or 'in 'thing to do. (the initials BSA were redefined to mean a number of
things, some rather crude.) Little is different today. But it really WAS
very cool and WE knew it, it still is and WE know it.
We've just merged two councils into one big council here in CT. I'm not
sure many besides those involved even know it. It is unlikely to have any
impact on my unit.
Will more youth join scouting because of it? A lot of time and money was
spent to do this. A lot of time and money will be spent on this new split.
If just HALF of this was spent on PR and advertising we might not have a
problem to fix. We (scouting) do stuff that no one else does! Even if these
activities are available elsewhere it is only at great expense to the
participant. We've got to lose our hokey, little old lady across the street
image. It still comes down to GET A KID TO JOIN YOUR UNIT. So, re invent
the wheel again (notice that spokes are back in vogue). But don't forget to
'sell it'. Sea Exploring has been around a long time; Ship 6 is just a
baby (1957) but I'm tired of hearing....'gee, I've never heard of you guys'
Will becoming a Sea Scout Exploring Venture really help?
