I agree with you as it applies to the lads, but you should count yourself
among the lucky. I am losing one or possible two ASMs over the "moral issue"
of BSA's "discriminatory policy." In addition, I am being brought before a
committee of our sponsoring organization to "explain" the current BSA stance
and how it pertains to our troop (there are CO members questioning their
sponsorship of the troop). However, all of this is transparent to the lads
though and you are correct that they are concern over other issues.
I too tire of the horse beating that sometimes goes on in the L, but it is
nice to hear how others are facing the problems that are arising.
If people would try to restrict their submissions to newsworthy and useful
items, leaving off the "me too's" and nitpicking, it would go a long way
toward presenting a balance of information on all topics pertinent to the
list. For example, the recent posting that talked about elevating the public
awareness of your local troop, highlighting the positive things that it
does, has prompted us to establish a public information office (the scribe
and an adult leader) to see that we are kept on the local radar screen in a
positive way.
You're right, if this issue or any other for that matter, dominates the list
we are missing the mark. That being said though, it would be foolish to bury
our heads in the sand and hope this all goes away if we don't look. It is
sometimes difficult to ignore a 500 lb gorilla when it is sitting next to
you eyeing your plate.

The Boy Scouts have been getting a lot of bad press lately. I know this
because every time an editorial is printed or a news item goes over the air,
I get a message in may inbox pointing me to a web site. There's a reason
this list has a rule about discussing the 3 G's (Girls, Gays, God), and it
should now be painfully obvious to everyone, even the newest members, why
that rule exists. It should also be painfully obvious that there is a reason
a great many of the more prevalent voices on this list have been silent of
late. There comes a time in any discussion where forward progress is no
longer being made. I'm afraid we've gone well past that point here.
