Marcia,
Troop 1232 has a great trail journal site at
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Geyser/7312/. They hiked all 211 miles of
the John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney in 16 days with an average
3,000 foot elevation gain and loss each day. Their packs weighed only about
23 pounds, including water and 2 days of food. The web site contains their
entire equipment list in detail, including prices. The other web site to
check out is http://www.geocities.com/lighttrailfood/, which was suggested
recently by someone on this list (I've forgotten who).
Both the Troop 1232 and the light trail food sites are Jardinite sites.
They follow many of the principles of Ray Jardine, who wrote a book on the
subject (that I need to read real soon) called the PCT Hiker's Handbook.
Many of his techniques are unconventional. For instance, Troop 1232 did
that incredible hiking without boots! They all used only trail running
shoes, but with a 23 pound pack hiking is a lot easier. I'm also told Mr.
Jardine backpacks with an umbrella. It should be an interesting read.
As for flavoring the water, we use Crystal Light in a two quart collapsible
Nalgene "canteen". The Scouts like it and it weighs almost nothing.
