Just trying to merge several themes/threads which Scouts v Dale seem to
have brought together.

YOUTH - It has been noted that persons disrespected a flag presentation
and Scouts at the recent Democratic convention. That was
reprehensible. But, it should give some of you pause when it comes to
the future relationships between Scouts and their general community.

Last year, during our Troop's sole fundraiser - wreath and tree sales,
some of the youth were challenged regarding BSA's policy. Most of the
time these youth are insulated because they don't wear their uniforms,
But, now that BSA's intolerance (Yes, I know that my use of that word
will be challenged - but put BSA in the context of other youth
organizations) is better known - expect more, and expect greater
reluctance in recruiting.

You had better start thinking of youth protection - not from physical
abuse, but from ridicule. You may decide to separate/insulate your
Troop fund-raising from a BSA identity.

CLOTHING - yes, I don't buy one brand: "Tommy Hilfiger" for political
reasons. They chose early on to make underwear in flag-like designs.
It doesn't matter to me that most of these flags were other country's, I
think that level of corporate disrespect is wrong - but that's my
opinion.

ANTHEMS/PRAYERS - I can only think back to my youth when in High School
and College. "Dixie" was played and sung, and the South's symbol was
waved. It was also a time when BSA was segregated - because that was
what public opinion "wanted". I sat, I didn't sing, and I didn't pray
for one team over another, or in the words of a religion that wasn't
mine. Consider what imposing your beliefs - because of your power
position evokes.

CONTRIBUTIONS - Separate Scouting from BSA. Consider what keeps your
unit running - it's not money flowing into BSA. BSA, generally doesn't
let money flow to you. You want Scouting to continue then separate in
people's minds (and wallets) Scouting from BSA. Tell corporations that
are questioning their policy that units are where the rubber meets the
road and they can with a clearer conscience match employee gifts to
units rather than to BSA.

If you want to contribute to BSA, go to it. If you want to assure that
youth are served fund actual units.

Jay
