There is a common misconception that surfaces here every so often that
money donated to the United Way and designated to a specific charity
actually helps this charity. Usually it doesn't, and here's the reason
why.

The United Way in each area allocates a certain percentage of their
annual take to each participating charity it services. They won't
increase this amount because people designate donations to a specific
charity, they merely use those donations to help make up the annual
percentage for that specific charity. Thus in an Alice-in-Wonderland
sort of logic, by designating your donation to a specific charity, you
free up a like ammount which is then distributed to all the other
charities. So, to simplify things, if you donate $80 to UW, designating
it to BSA, and UW is working with 20 charities this year, BSA will get
your $80, freeing up $80 other dollars which gets split 20 ways, leaving
BSA with a net gain of $4. If you donate your local council $80, you
local council gets the entire $80, less the $4 it would have gotten from
UW, for a net gain of $76. If you make that a round $ 100, you will get
a nice placque showing that you are a nice person.

In short, if you want to give money to BSA, do so directly, at work, if
your company will allow specified donations, or privately.

Encourage others who support scouting, and are not on this list to do the same.
