First off, I would suggest that to get a high quality back pack that
will grow with your son from 11-18+ will be extremely difficult or
expensive if not simply impossible. That said, there are a number of
internal frame packs with adjustable torso sizes that could help some.
Personally, I prefer external frame packs, which tend not to be as
adjustable. Maybe I'm 'old school', or just like all the external
pockets that come with external frame packs, but your own personal
preference dictates here. Many outfitters will allow you to 'test
drive' packs before purchasing them.
One suggestion would be to look to the Scout Catalog for reasonably
priced, somewhat adjustable packs, and get him what I would call a
starter pack. They are not top quality, but are (I believe) made by
Camp Trails and do very well. I have owned and used them in the past.
In fact, I was issued one in 1984 at Philmont, and it traveled with me
all summer (~230 miles), as well as another ~200 hiking miles since
then, and countless camping trips along the way (it's all I ever pack
in) and has just recently reached the point where I feel I must replace
it. Even then, it's still functional, and I probably won't replace it
until I start doing some more serious backpacking. Getting a starter
pack will allow him to get a feel for what he likes, see and try out
what others are using, and decide whether or not backpacking is
something he really loves to do.
When I do replace mine, I will probably go with a Kelty, or a Jansport.
Both make terrific external frame packs. I have a 30 yr old Kelty that
I started off with, that my son uses now, and is in better shape than
the BSA pack, with almost as many miles and outings on it. If not for
the small size and inflexible design, I would probably still use it.
While I am not as familiar with Internal frame packs, I have heard great
things about Lowe. Once you have looked around in person, I would
suggest you look at www.campmor.com for a great variety and competitive
pricing.
