Having been trained in hazmat shipping and having been in the aviation
business for some 28 years, I can say that the present hazmat rules were in
place looonng before the ValueJet accident. However, the ValueJet accident
(and many others) does illustrate the importance of properly packaging and
declaring hazardous materials. As a 747 captain, I'd really appreciate it if
everybody would ship stuff properly on my airplane.

According to the FAA, DOT, and my airline, properly purged stoves are okay.
Properly packaged and declared fuel is okay. Other airlines may be more
restrictive than the law requires. Unfortunately, you might run into some
airline employees who are excessively cautious due to ignorance of the law
and airline policy.
