I use hiking poles in the high mountains with heavy loads. Mostly down hill
to take the shock out of my knees. There have been some studies that show
they can take 10-20% of the pressure off your knees. They look just like
ski poles except they do not have baskets and they do have a large rubber
base at the tip to protect the ground. You can get them with spring loaded
handles so they absorb more pressure, but that doesn't work real well with
big loads.
The only time I carry a hiking staff is for firewood. Some day when I want
to look really cool walking around a Jamboree or a Camporee, I may get a
walking stick with all the "bells and whistles" to smack dogs and ornery
Scoutmasters and to lean on so when I opine more people listen and think I
know what I am talking about.
My 86 pesos.
