Scouters:
By a 5-4 vote the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down a New Jersey
Supreme Court ruling that the dismissal of a gay Scout leader had
been illegal under the state's anti-discrimination law
Forcing [the BSA] to accept gays would violate its constitutional
right of freedom of association and free speech under the First
Amendment [the majority opinion said]. Applying a state public
accommodations law to require the Boy Scouts to admit a gay troop
leader violates the group's constitutional right of expressive
association.
Regardless of how individuals feel about the BSA policy and Supreme
Court ruling, let us remember Courteous, Kind, etc. Let's accept this
ruling with grace and dignity instead of smugness or despair and get
back to the jobs of delivering the promise to the youth who expect
our best.
