We have been attending the same Summer camp for 25 years now. I'm not
actually sure if there was any pre-registration when I became SM six summers
ago, but, Merit Badge sign-up consisted of a small riot the first evening at
camp that needed at least 2 ASMs (big ones preferably) to get the boys into
the classes they chose that afternoon!
We now pre-register via e-mail by the end of May. What a pleasurable
difference! There is plenty of time for careful consideration of badges and
I grab SM conferences with boys whom I see have made choices that may not be
in their best interests. Only the older boys are allowed to "schedule" free
time and as they have much leadership responsibility, I think they deserve
it.
As for time that naturally comes during afternoon and evening free-time,
what would camp be without time to roam with a buddy or two and just enjoy
the taste of freedom in the outdoors. This may be the first time in their
lives when TV, the mall or electronic entertainment are not options they can
choose! We've all seen 11 year olds amuse themselves for hours feeding a
campfire, how kewl is that!
