Well, Mike, here's how I got into the walking stick habit. When I was WL for
the youngest one we were at the Cub-Parent Overnight, and one of his
Den-mates walked up to me and said "Here, Mr. Gerlach, I found you a walking
stick!" Of course, it immediately became a permanent extension to my arm,
and I don't believe I would have made it up Mt. Phillips (or even Uracca
Mesa) last year without it. As to accouterments, the self-same youngest (now
15, Life, & my companion on above-mentioned trek) read the list over my
shoulder and asked "So you don't have to carry a pack?". My stick has a
leather thong wrapped as a grip/wrist strap, a hose clamp to hold the bottom
together where it started to split, and carving - my intitials, the numbers
of the 2 Troops I've been in since I got it, an Eagle, a Brotherhood arrow,
the PSR brand, and the name of every place I've camped with it. I've told
Florence it goes in the coffin with me (I, of course, to be in full Class
A's), but sometimes I think I'll will it to the kid. I love my stick!
