I have read the comments on staffs. Thought at first, now this is a good
idea. Until I saw the mess of trying to attach all of the gadgets to it. I
have visited the web site with all of the Baden Powell info on it (Pine Tree
Web?). B-P comments on the staff, but did not mention the need for the cell
phone and fax machine attached. My grandad used a walking stick in the hills
of WV into his 90's. He used it for balance and to smack dogs that came
after him. He was not a 15 mile a day guy, just a walker. I was watching the
Discovery Channel the other night and saw a program on a competition called
"Eco Challenge". This was a type of team racing over the hills and thru the
rivers of some rugged country. Many of the hikers in that competition
carried a walking stick that appeared to be made of high tech aluminum or
something. More like a ski pole than a walking staff. They had no gadgets
attached.
I think walking sticks are a personnal preference item, much like a poncho
or rain suit. I also prefer to go "low tech", not relying on gadgets, but
relying on knowledge of my ability to handle problems with materials at
hand. The are plenty of books out about simplicity. As scouters, one of our
goals should be to be able to live outdoors with a minimum of "stuff" rather
than a lot.
Just my thoughts.
