Been a while since I've been around, spending most of my time with Cub
Scouts and the Cub-Talk list.
Coming up on my last year as Cubmaster and about 18 months from when my
youngest son will be in Boy Scouts with his older brother.
Just got back from Scout Camp at the Phillips Scout Reservation in
northwestern, WI. I had a boy in Boy Scout Camp from Sunday - Friday
and my youngest at Webelos Resident Camp from Wednesday - Saturday. Was
a fun week.
Everyone seemed to have a good time at camp, even though it was a bit
damp from time to time....liquid sunshine! Started out with swim check,
water was a bit cold the first day. I stuck with our first year campers
and went to Tenderfoot and Second Class class with them. The staff
there were swamped as they had alot more than expected (close to 30 boys
at times). I thought that was unfortuneate as they couldn't cover what
they needed to as well as I thought they needed to. But they still did
a good job. I will find out tonight for sure, but I think our first
year boys made it through those two classes and they took Leatherwork
and Swimming Merit badges too, I know they finished those. At lunch
time on Wednesday I picked up my Webelos son so stayed on the other side
of camp at Cub World from then on, but visited when I could, even doing
the 5 mile hike with them. A good camp, we had scouts get merit badges
from Computer to Reptiles and Amphibians. One scout and the scoutmaster
did the mile swim. We got perfect scores on our campsite inspections.
One scout earned his lifeguarding, one of our scouts earned the golden
archer award for highest archery score. My son was thrilled hitting one
out of five in trap shooting.
Only weird thing was having a boy have (we think) an allergic reaction
to the iron in the water, his face became swollen, and had some
splotches on his body. His Mom (a nurse) ended up taking him home
overnight, he went to a doctor who gave him medicine, told him to drink
bottled water and sent him back the next day. He cleared up quickly
after that.
Well, that should be enough of a report,
