Bob Rosebrough sent in an article that someone else
wrote, that said:
<Conversely, "Boys are three times as likely as girls
to be enrolled in special education programs and four
times as likely to be diagnosed with attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder," finds Sommers. They
are more likely to be involved in drugs and crime, to
kill themselves and to drop-out of school or be
expelled.>
Being privy to the latest research data regarding
AD/HD, I have to take issue with the above author's
seriously out of date facts. I have just today
received a packet from CHADD National (Children and
Adults with Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity
Disorder)
giving the very latest of informational facts.
For those of you not familiar with me, I am a Chapter
Coordinator of a 140 member support group for adults
and parents of children that have AD/HD. I do this in
my spare time left over after what I do for Boy
Scouts. ;)
I quote from the received information packet, "While
it has long been thought that boys with AD/HD
outnumber girls by approximately three-to-one, recent
research shows that the actual numbers may be nearly
equal."
Furthermore, if the author's final comment in the
paragraph at the top of this post is referring to
AD/HD youth, there was a recently published (this past
year) research paper by Dr. Russell Barkley (one of
our nation's leading AD/HD authorities)that found that
these drastic events usually only occurred in youth
that suffered from AD/HD that was left untreated!
Given that I am aware of verified data that proves
this much of her article to be unfounded, I choose to
discount the rest of her article altogether.
She may have found SOME (caps not used because of
yelling, but rather for emphasis)feminists that felt
the way that she has described, but an informed,
responsible reporter does not color all feminists with
the same shade of paint, because of the beliefs of a
few.
Sorry if I sound irritated. You've hit a hot button
of mine. People that try to appear to know what they
are talking about in regards to AD/HD, when in fact
they know next to nothing! It is very irresponsible of
them, and can cause irreparable damage to a child or
parent that might read such nonsense.
I certainly hope that I've not upset anyone by stating
my opinions. If anyone is interested in more VALID
AD/HD data, please feel free to contact me off list.
YIS,
Pam Glidden
District Commissioner
Green River District
Chief Seattle Council
and CHADD Chapter Coordinator
