I have been following this thread with some interest since I am an advisor to a co-ed Venturing crew. The Venture (Venturing) list is also filled with questions on how to deal with the co-ed aspects of the program. The one question that was recently asked that really got to me was "Do you allow your female Venturers to wear two piece bathing suits?" Incredible! Perhaps I am the only one out there, but our crew has been up and running for two years and we have had none of the problems that seem to be of concern on this thread. Very early in the formation of the crew, the youth members developed a set of bylaws that outlined expected behavior, including boy - girl interaction. And they have lived by those rules. I guess if we hover around our young people, always expecting them to do the wrong thing, they will. I try to treat them like adults. It is amazing how they respond when they are treated with respect as young adults.
By the way, we leave for Philmont in two weeks. We have had several over night shakedown hikes. Yes, we follow Philmont's backcountry protocols and do not pee in the latrines, but we certainly do not pee together. We always change into sleep clothes at night as a part of Philmont bear protocol, but we don't stand around the campsite together when we do.
We are also blessed to have an associate advisor who serves as a wonderful role model to the entire crew, both boys and girls. Robin mountain bikes, canoes in Canada, rock climbs, caves, and just returned from Egypt where she went SCUBA diving with her family. Her oldest son is a member of the crew. She is a great leader, sensitive to the needs of the crew, and can walk me into the dirt.
Come on folks, it is time to move on to something new.
