Greetings to all SCOUTS-L members:

Cub Pack 61, of Flemington, New Jersey will be celebrating the AMAZING
tenure of its only Cubmaster! Pack 61 is chartered by American Legion Post
159 in Flemington, and has been for over 50 years! In addition, we have
exactly ONE Cubmaster in all that time! We believe this makes him the
longest-tenured Cubmaster in the United States.

Douglas Niece was never a Scout himself, and he and his wife never had
children. Yet, he has dedicated over 50 years of his life to the first,
and oldest, Cub Scout pack in Hunterdon County, New Jersey (there are now
XX packs in the county). In his extraordinary tenure, Doug has been
Cubmaster to thousands of boys, many of whom have gone one to earn the
Eagle rank or become volunteer Scouters. In addition to his role as
Cubmaster, Doug has taught Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church for,
"Oh, about 65 years." He has also served as a volunteer teacher's aid in
the Franklin Township Elementary School for several decades. He is also a
nationally-respected expert in raising and judge chrysanthemums - a hobby
of his. Doug truly embodies the spirit of Scouting and sets an
extraordinary example of community service for us to follow.

Pack 61 will be holding a surprise dinner in honor of Mr. Niece on Friday,
June 16, 2000. We have invited numerous Scouters, professional staff,
local and state community leaders, former Cub Scouts, and all 125 Cub
Scouts in our pack. We are also hoping to have the Director of BSA's Cub
Scout Division attend as well. One thing missing are greetings and
congratulations from other Scout Units across the country - and around the
world. Please e-mail your greetings to rob.s@pack61.org. We will collect
all these messages and present them to Doug on the 16th.

Proceeds from our dinner will be donated to the Central New Jersey
Council's endowment fund in honor of Mr. Niece's long service to
Scouting. We will present Mr. Niece with the James West Fellowship at the
dinner. If you would like to contribute to the fund, please send a check
payable to "Cub Pack 61" to: Robert Sheneman, 31 Shields Ave., Flemington,
NJ 08822.

Thank you in advance for your support.

YiS,
Rob Sheneman

PS - I would be glad to send biographical information (PDF) to anyone
interested. It may help you in writing a congratulatory letter from your unit.
