Our troop collects for special events, Camporee, Summer Camp, crab boil on
the beach in August, etc. All other campouts are done by Patrol method.
Since we always have 6-8 adults driving, we seldom charge for gas money.
The leaders are going, so it just has never been an issue. We collect
newspapers in our sponsors parking lot ( have been since 1925) About every
3rd or 4th meeting we take the first half hour of the meeting to transfer the
paper from the paper box to the troop truck. Everyone is expected to help.
Once and awhile we do a group fundraiser, sell popcorn or Scoutfair tickets.
It works for us, the meetings go by so fast, I can't imagine taking time to
collect dues and still get everything done.
I know of one Scoutmaster of a Troop who collects $100 per Scout at
Recharter. But that pays for all the registration, troop expenses,
transportation and food for all campouts for the rest of the year (Summer
camp is paid for by those who particpate in selling mulch and last year they
profited close to $8000). By collecting up front he has a higher turnout at
campouts because the parents rationalize that they've paid for the food, etc
so their kid better go.
