"This is bit of a "foreign" concept in our troop. How many troops really
charge the scouts dues. Why do you do it?"

"So why do they need the scouts to pay dues? If it is just to "teach
responsibility" that seems out of line with units being thrifty. We have
no real expenses that are tied to our troop meetings per se, except for
maybe some twine occasionally. I it costs nothing to run a meeting, I see
no need to charge the scouts for coming.

What am I missing here?"

Well, in our troop, the dues go to pay primarily for the on-going expense of
awards. We've got a bunch of kids with 20+ merit badges, and it seems that
we constantly are handing out badges of rank and position patches. All of
that costs money.

What little is left, is put into the troop treasury and used for tents and
equipment eventually.

BTW, our dues are $5.00 per month. It doesn't leave a lot of, if any,
surplus.
