My "Explorer Manual" first printing coypwrite 1955 on p 119 has "Eagle
Trails in Posts or Troop Crews":

1. 2c -> 1c -> Star -> Life -> Eagle

2. (Apprentice + Outdoor Rating [like a merit badge]) - > Star -> Life
-> Eagle

3. Apprentice + Bronze (any two ratings ... Plus) Star -> Life -> Eagle

On p 120 "an Explorer retains crtedit for any PREVIOUS [emphasis mine]
Scout advancenment" it then goes on explaining Explorers 2c or
apprentice can earn merit badges and outlines the route as above.

The new Explorer manual "Exploring" (brought in the wedge) gave two
options on page 239 the "Boy Scouting method" refered to boy scout
requirements in other pubs and a detailed "Exploring method" (eight
steps) no mention of previous rank since there were none in the "new"
Exploring, but it did have a project (conservation) for the first time
and told how to earn merit badges - see Scout pubs. No girls yet.
