Hi Ben,
As far as I know there are no restrictions on parents signing their
own sons' merit badge cards. When my son was in Scouts, I signed his First
Aid merit badge card.
Your troop may have "policies" in place which prohibit that
practice, but it is my understanding that they are unenforceable. Keep in
mind, however that if parents sign off too many merit badges, especially if
their son is the only Scout in attendance, that it does give the appearance
of favoritism. I'm certainly not impugning your character, but only stating
one of the objections to the practice.
One of the other objections is that some people believe that it is
good for a boy to learn to use resources other than his immediate family.
Learning to use the resources available are an important part of being an
effective leader.
Yours in Scouting,
Alan

I've heard a rumor recently which went as follows.
If you are a Merit Badge Counselor for a badge, you may not sign off
your own son for this merit badge. IE - your son must get another MB
counselor,
or have another MB counselor verify his work, and sign the blue card.
