So, if a boy doesn't finish Eagle by age 18, when he "ages out" of Boy
Scouts, do we create a "new adult" space for him and let him finish, because
it's so important for him to finish what he started even if he can't do it
within the long-known rules? You may think this petty, but in Scouts we see
kids all the time who were told they were God's gift to Scouting because they
finished AoL and crossed over early (around here, Feb is early) and then were
confronted with new expectations, for which *their* Cub experience (though
not all Cubs have it this way) was not a useful foreshadowing.
No, if the kids insist on leaving Cubs before Pinewood, then fine (although
who gives them that expectation?). But they don't race. Invite them to come
in their new Scout finery, announce them as honored returnees, make them
honorary scorekeepers, have them help with check-in and monitoring the "pit"
where the cars wait for their runs, have them watch the finish line, award
the prizes. Show them they can participate in a PWD as a Scout, but that
racing is for Cubs.
