I have been following this thread with much interest.
I see the same issues that many have been mentioned in
our troop (both the boys and parents).
I can only comment that the award is not the end.
As the old saying goes:"Does the end justify the means?"
The Scouting Aims include: Character, Citizenship, Fitness.
Advancement (including the Eagle rank) is simply one of the Methods
we use along this path--in other words Eagle doesn't mean ANYTHING
if the Scout doesn't achieve the 3 Aims (sorry to all you Eagles).
As a side bar, I can only relate the heartfelt pride I have as my oldest
son (slooooowwwly...) works towards his Eagle. As he was crossing over
from CS to BS, he told me: "Dad there's only three things I want to do
in Scouts: be an Eagle, get in OA, and go to Philmont."
I couldn't think of anything to add to that list.
I used to be a Bear....
