The public school system in one of the larger communities in our rural
district will NOT allow classroom visits in preparation for Scouting
Sign-Up night. They do however, allow the Sign-Up to take place in one
of their buildings.
In talking with the administration, it was discovered that they don't
dislike the BSA. Rather, there is a fear that an onslaught of
organizations would petition for presentation time during the precious few
school hours if they allowed the BSA (or other similar organizations)
time.
This administration did suggest to our DE and our past District Chairman
that Scouters COULD request time to provide an educational exhibit or
display to all the appropriate classes - both boys and girls. The
suggestion was for a "hands-on" walk-through trailer where kids could see
and/or do simple, quick BSA-related activities that would supplement the
classroom learning experience. It would be perfectly OK for all kinds of
BSA advertising on and throughout this trailer. I believe there could
even be a handout touting the BSA - as long as there is educational value
to the venture.
I am curious to know if anyone else has completed or explored this type of
activity, preferably to cover both Cub and Boy Scouts. We don't want to
reinvent the wheel here. At this point, we're only concerned with the
trailer contents and setup. We don't need to hear about trailer
insurance, liability, etc.
If you know of something similar, or have some suggestions on content or
activities, I'd be very glad and appreciative to hear from you. Thanks in
advance!
