FWIW: What are our local webs sites really good for? Are they used much?
You might not like the answer, yet, but that will surely improve. For now,
we should not worry too much about "rights", but focus on how to make webs
sites functional in the manner of providing useful services that are used
by scouts as well as adults. In the short term, if you need to be an
unocifficial site, do it, but be sensitive to Council's concerns. Being
able to print forms is obviously handy, having a trip/meeting calendar,
some troop history, the troops rules/policy, write-ups of old trips (I love
those), planning guides, check lists, newsletter, that sort of thing. One
thing suggested by a scout was a bulletin board - we have yet to do this
but it might help improve patrol communication - have any other scouters
had success with it? I see web sites as a good way to pass on trip and
troop planning information from old scouts/scouters to new ones. In the
old days this info disappeared when scouters left a troop.
Also, consider that we have too many choices in communication, and
sometimes this hinders rather than helps us. Sometime in the future some
of these will merge or die, then things will be simpler, as in the old
days, when if was face-face, mail, or telephone (only 3).
