Two possibilities exist according to Youth Protection procedures and both
depend upon the conclusions of an ad hoc committee formed for the purpose of
determining whether the "accused", who must first petition for readmission to
Scouting, should be readmitted. The two possibilities are, of course,
readmit to Scouting or do not readmit to Scouting.
For the falsely accussed, i.e. the innocent Scouter, clearly we hope for the
readmit result. However, the results of the OJ Simpson trial (both of them)
should emphasize to everyone that a criminal court does not prove the
innocence of a person, it merely finds that he is, or is not, guilty beyond a
reasonable doubt. Therefore, a Scouter could be denied readmission even if
found not guilty by a criminal court, just as OJ was found liable for the
wrongful death of his wife, even though the criminal court found him not
guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The sad thing about cases like this is that there are no really satisfactory
answers, at least really satisfactory to everyone.
