Coding rope ends

I use the color scheme described, but we do it by yards-- red is three yds,
blue is four, green is five, and yellow is six. I hear them say, "Hey, throw
me a yellow," or, "This is a little job, gimme a red." Seven yards? A red and
a blue! Eight? Your choice of two reds or a red & a green. And so forth.

My kitchen floor is laid out in one-foot tiles, so on a boring winter day
when there's nothing else to do I place my kitchen chairs the appropriate
number of tiles apart and string & cut nylon line. Cheapo colored electrical
tape on the ends and a quick pass thru a candle, and another batch of lines
is ready for use. (If I can keep the kid from absconding with half of it.)

Actually, the best birthday present I ever gave a Scout was his very own huge
spool of 3/8" nylon line from the local ship-supply shop. It's a mild salmon
color, customarily used in lobster pots, and its color makes it distinctive
when he goes out camping. Cost was about one tenth of comparable hanks of
clothesline from the hardware store, and he can cut it any length he needs
(and mark the ends, I might add).
