For my Webelos Den this year, we got a bunch of feathers, some cheap plastic
beads, some different and unusual beads of wood and metal, bells, bones, etc.
We give out some simple plastic beads of different colors for being on time,
being in uniform, having their book, etc. They get neater looking ones for
having a parent stay with them at the meeting, doing work in their book at home
with a parent (like the work for their faith, as we're a multi-denominational
Pack), participating in Pack and Den outings, etc. They get metallic beads for
attendance and uniforming at a Pack meeting.
We give out feathers for perfect attendance for a calendar month, and painted
"achievement feathers" for completing an activity pin. For three consecutive
months of perfect attendance, bear claws (I found some incredibly realistic
looking wood ones at a local Native American retailer for about $3 each).
They thread the beads and feathers onto their coup sticks, and we'll duplicate
them on their section of the patrol totem. All of this gets displayed at the
Pack meeting, so there's an incentive to have as many beads as possible,
especially the really unusual ones.
All this was laid out for them at the first meeting, and the response was
tremendous, since the boys really want the 'different' looking beads and the
bear claw. I also have some (real!) hawk talons for a year of perfect
attendance. And don't worry, they're collected naturally ... we have an
extensive natural hawk population in this area of the Southwest.
