Origins of BSA troop flags

Does anyone have information concerning the origin of the troop flag as used
by Boy Scout units? Particularly, I am interested in when was the practice
of using troop flags started, early styles of the flag, how the current style
was adopted, size restrictions, what can be placed on the flag and what
cannot, as well as any history connected to the use of troop flags. If anyone
knows of a resource, I would appreciate that also.
