Jim: Don't forget that the fleur-di-lis those guys wear is "for real"- at
least historically. Rumor has it that when created the Madison Scouts were
an all Eagle Scout drill team (though frankly I have my doubts). I believe
they even marched in full Scout uniform. Those days are long gone however
and the sole connection to the BSA is the name and that odd looking
"frenchie" symbol.
Yours in Scouting,
G. John Marmet
Scouting has the distinction of starting many fine organizations. The
current Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White, became famous locally by
taking young men in the housing projects and turning them into a highly
skilled tumbling team. It is not often remembered that the "Jessie White
Tumblers" started as a special interest Explorer post. Regardless of his
politics, Jessie White deserves praise for his efforts here. The Tumblers
recently appeared at the Glenview Centennial Independence Day parade (in
which I marched as a Scouting Rotarian). They were tumbling there way down
the 3 mile parade route in 95+ degree heat, and there, driving the "chase"
vehicle was, completely unhearalded: Jessie White. No big sign talking
about "Your Secretary of State", or Jessie White in 3 foot high letters.
Just Jessie driving a Chevy Suburban and no fanfare. It was refreshing.
