Eagle Letters

I've been reading this thread off and on and would like to offer a
different perspective. By way of background... When I retired from the
Naval Reserve as a Captain 5 yrs ago after serving 33 years- at my ceremony
(where I received letters from dignitaries)- it is customary to give the
spouse and female children- some flowers and a certificate of thanks from
the Navy. Well- I wrote a letter to my wife (as C.O. of the USS Everson,
EV-1) where I expressed my thanks to her for all her support over the
years. Indeed she even launched three craft of her own and provided for
their training to be able to conduct independent operations on their own,
etc. It was very moving. I couldn't read it and had to have my XO read it
at the ceremony.
My suggestion is- that the parents of the Eagle Scout write him a personal
letter telling him how proud they are of him and what his accomplishment
has meant to them and should mean to him. I dare say that this letter will
be one of his most prized possessions later in life. My Dad (a vigil honor
member) is 86 and is in failing health. I have never received a letter
from him. Mom always writes to us from them with any news. I have begun to
save her letters as I know she won't be with us too much longer either.
It's just a thought. Too often we get hung up on letters from famous
people- but those close to us are the ones we care most about. Letters from
gparents too might be considered.
