Hi group, I was talking with someone who went on a Philmont trek this
year, and he told of a for lack of better word "reflection process"
called Thorns and Roses. I was wondering if any body out there could
tell me more "i.e." rules when it should be used ect.
Hi,
Its been awhile, but when I did a trek at Philmont in 1991, our Staff Guide
conducted what he called a nightly 'Thorns and Roses'. At the end of the
day, before we headed to our tents and called it a night, we would perform
this reflection process. In a circle, each scout and adult would take turns
in stating a bad event from the day (a 'thorn') and a good event from the
day (a 'rose'). The only real rule that I can remember is that you couldn't
use 'it rained to much day' as a thorn (and of course you couldn't critisize
someone else). We had plenty of rain, but a great time. This reflection
worked really well, only took a few minutes, and gave everyone thoughts of
things to improve and also the high points of the crew and indiviedaul
scouts.
Since returning from Philmont, whenever our Venture Patrol does a
backpacking trip or other type of high adventure trek, we have used this
really simple but effective evaluation tool.
It has worked well for us. Hope this helps
