Re: Managing Our Scouting Image

Jim,
I agree completely. I've gone to the PLC and Troop Committee and told
them that every time we go out into the community lately, it seems that
we are selling something to raise money. That's not the image that I want
to be associated with.
It's not a bad idea just to do a couple high profile community service
projects a year just because and spend a couple hours each camping
trip working for the park that we recreate at.

I recently had an experience that I'd like to pass along for
consideration.

I was conversing with a group of community leaders when the topic
of Scouting came up, and the differences between youth groups.
The question was asked "What do you think of when you hear Boy
Scouts?" Replies were rapidly forthcoming. "Eagle Scout", "Be
Prepared", "Service to others", "Leadership", "First Aid", "Integrity",
"Wilderness skills", and "Helping little old ladies across the street"
were all offered.

When the question was asked "What do you think of when you hear
Girl Scouts?", only one response was offered. "Cookies". The
discussion
stopped there. I was disappointed in the results of the conversation, but
it caused me to think long and hard about the reputation and image of
Boy Scouts. I believe that we need to be careful about managing our
image and how the public sees us. I'd hate to repeat the conversation
20 years from now and get a single response of "popcorn".

Thought for the day: Are we balancing the amount of time and effort we
place into raising money for ourselves and the time and effort we place
in serving others? Food for thought.

YIS,

Jim Fuller
