Dear Scouting Friends,
I have just returned from vacation to find 363 messages from you all.
It was fun plowing through them all to catch up on the issues.
We went to Mt. Rainier national park. I had hoped that conditions there
would improve, but they did not. Mid July, and the base camp is still under
8 ft. of snow pack. It was -10 degrees at the summit when we were there,
so I abandoned all hope.
Next it was off to Olympic national park to enjoy the trees. While the park
was beautiful, the national forests surrounding the park were heart breaking.
The logging industry is doing a poor job of harvesting wood, and the result
is land that may never heal.
On the way back home, we stopped at a couple of state parks. They run a
Jr. Ranger program as well as evening campfire programs. They were mobbed
with kids. The widespread enthusiasm and desire for things outdoor clearly
demonstrated that we can have as many cubs as we want. All we have to do
is provide a program the "delivers the promise".
