Bob,
If you really want to keep the weight of the pack within reasonable
limits, leave
the propane (and its stove) at home. They don't use 'em at Philmont because
they do weigh so much. You do have to exercise caution with liquid fuel
stoves,
but the stoves are so much lighter and the fuel bottles also get lighter as
you use
up the fuel in them; propane canisters are almost as heavy empty as they are
full.
And you can find yourself in even more trouble if the propane bottle
doesn't
re-seal when you take the stove off. I've had it happen twice and the only
thing
you can do is put a stick in the valve, turn the bottle upside down, push
down,
and exhaust all the propane (don't get frostbitten as the bottle gets very
cold when
you do this).
Although I think there are better stoves on the market, and it has been
discussed
here on the list, you will probably find the Peak 1 stove to be about the
least
expensive stove for backpacking. If nothing else it is reliable.
