Personally I try to stay away from DEET. Some years back I started
getting terrible headaches--but only on Scout campouts (don't say it).
Anyway, I ran across an article that one of the symptoms of allergy to
DEET is guess what? Headache. Low concentrations don't seem to bother
me too much, but I still use non-DEET when I can find it (hard to find
sometimes).
Saw an article the other day which compared different types of bug dope.
Was while waiting for a haircut so I don't remember magazine for
sure--think it was a real recent issue of Outdoor Life. What really
sticks in my mind, though, was the rating done on a wrist strap of some
sort. It was effective for a whole 15 seconds!
I'm sure there are other articles comparing/rating this stuff. Try your
local Library--ask to see a magazine index.

Just ran across this great quote this morning:
Never rise to speak till you have something to say; and when you have
said it, cease.
