Venture High Adventure?? Advice

Marcia Trudeau (MarciaTX@AOL.COM)
Mon, 12 Jul 1999 22:35:48 EDT

I am the advisor for the Venture Patrol, which is now in its fourth month of
existence. I have read all the literature I can get my hands on along with
getting some ideas from the Venturing Program.

Tonight we had a quick adult meeting. I updating the adults on the progress
of the Ventures: They have been meeting twice a month in addition to the
regular meetings. They have gone on two campouts, have requested and
obtained Venture equipment, such as tents, and are planning a garage sale
fundraiser for August. The Ventures, have determined that they want to go on
a skiing trip this Spring. It was voted on, and all Scouts agreed that this
is what they wanted to do. The Asst. Venture Crew Chief checked on the
school spring schedule to make sure its the same for all the Scouts and he
visited a travel agency to get an idea on where to go and cost. He also
rented how to ski tapes. (I served Sno-balls and Eskimo Pies) They have
also made a list of all the things they need to consider for the trip, such
as lodging, food, clothing, etc. and are working at having individual scouts
responsible for different things.

I am very proud of this accomplishment so far.

In explaining to a few of the leaders about what they want to do, I instantly
received the response "Well...this isn't a High Adventure". I explained
that the High Adventure is their choice if its reasonable, and what makes a
High Adventure is the amount of work and effort they put into planning,
fundraising, etc. These scouts have never been in snow...so this is a High
Adventure to them. I explained that they are in addition looking at
Philmont for activities that time of year, such as a possible winter campout
.

The Scoutmaster is supportive, along with some of the adults.

Would a skiing trip be considered a High Adventure, if the Scouts in fact are
doing the planning, making arrangements, conducting fundraisers....and
experiencing something new, which is skiing and snow??
