ALERT! BWCA Severe Weather Problems

Steven Tobin (stobin@MMMPCC.ORG)
Tue, 6 Jul 1999 23:37:31 -0600

For those signed up for a BWCA trip in the near future, be aware that a
severe weather front went through the BWCA over the 4th of July weekend,
dumping 7 inches of rain over a wide area that was already saturated by
continuous rain fronts. A large swath of trees was leveled by high winds
or a tornado. As of today 19 people had to be airlifted out due to
injuries, and the extent of the damage and injured people is not known at
this time. Moose lake, home of Sommers Canoe base, was on the east end of
the worst weather as I understand it. Water levels are extremely high, and
flooding is widespread. I heard an unofficial report that the Gunflint
trail is closed because of downed trees and severe washouts.

It would be a good idea to check with the authorities before you leave
home.
