NEWS AND PHOTO SERVICE PHILMONT SCOUT RANCH JUNE 28, 1999

Contact: G. William Spice, General Manager

"Early in the morning of Monday, June 28, 1999, 16 year old trek participant Jason Ploch died of an apparent asthama attack while camping in the Harlan area. Emergency CPR was administered by the camp staff and Philmont medical staff responded to the situation. Ploch, a native of San Antonio, TX, was the crew chief and had completed all but the last day of his ten-day hike."

The only things that I will add to this is that the acute asthma attack has been confirmed by autopsy, Jason was with his father and younger brother, and that all of us at Philmont are deeply saddened by his death. Any death is hard to take, but the death of a Scout is particualrily difficult. One of the Philmont chaplains is heading to San Antonio to participate in the memorial service.
