In your message you stated "I was not aware that there was a major difference
in leader philosophy or youth leadership principles." After working as an
adult leader at the troop level and now as an advisor of a Venturing crew, I
can tell you that there may not be difference in leadership philosophy, but
there is a huge difference in how you deal with young adults instead of youth
members. Young adults are searching for role models and mentors. I did not
see very much mentoring going on at the troop level; there were the adults
and there were the scouts. The line is not so clear when dealing with young
adults. I spend a good deal of my time really mentoring (not one of
Scouting's defined skills) and letting the young adults put the program
together and carry it out. Right now, I am finding that our Scout roundtable
just isn't suited for my and other Venturing crews needs and will start a
Venturing roundtable this fall. Take a look at how we deal with our own
children. For a 11-12 year old, you handle it one way, for a 16-17 you have
to change. If Wood Badge tries to cover all age groups, it is going to have
to raise the instruction up to an introductory level instead of getting into
the details.
