On April 30th I did visit in my own hometown Ommen(I'm not native),
Overijssel, Netherlands the festivities for Queen's day.
Queen's day is the National holiday (something like 4th of J.) in the
Netherlands. The day when we remember the beginning of the
Republic, our independance war, when we find time in between the
general festivities, the day we celebrate being Dutch. There's
festivities everywhere, except for some villages where they
celebrate it on thebirthday of the first Dutch queen in her own right,
the people there go to other places. Flags are flown everywhere,
beer is flowing...
Riots do happen. Two years ago riots started in Ommen, last year it
was a disaster, with people coming esp. for the riots, almost at
least. This year police was everywhere, but they did their job.
The parade was fine, but with less walking and cycling participants
than ever before... According my dad half(or more of them) were or
had been Scouts, they dare to confront the mindless, cruel monster
called public. (My father does the finances for the Orange-"union"
and had "vowed" to do the finances of the Van Pallandt Scouting
group until the group had a modern clubhome without a single cent
debt and no longer, the clubhome is there now). Scouts did collect
the money for the parade, Scouts did guard the "festival"-
terrain,(OK there were plain clothes cops too) , Scouts(even
Kwestas) did games for the kids there, did sell the tickets, did
control the tickets, (I borrowed a tie and did join the controlling
Scouts, oh sweet memories, being with my old group, coolest tie in
the world (: )
Scouts are with the remembrance of the victims of WW II(4th of
may), the one who do the flag, assist with bringing flowers to the
monuments...
So where I come from Scouts do have their part in Society.
