Re: Littleton tragedy ...a different perspective

Wow! It's about time somebody's getting this thing right.
This is it, folks. This is how we do our part to prevent tragedies like
the one in Colorado. We have to understand where the shooters were
coming from. While my own high school experience was not as bad as many
of those written here, they sound just like an escalated version of what
we went through. A highly evident caste system has always existed in our
schools. Thankfully, Scouting, and the friends I had made within it,
were my answer to these things. My years on camp staff are fondly
remembered as the greatest collection of uber-geeks I had the pleasure
of associating with, marathon all-night Dungeons and Dragons sessions
and all. We were kindred spirits in Scouting, although many of us may
not have ever associated outside the program.
We provide the safe haven, and do all we can to prevent hazing. We
provide a program where the oppressed and the oppressors can meet as
equals and develop a mutual respect for each other. That alone probably
could have prevented the Littleton tragedy.
