In the US a dutch oven is a cast iron pot with a wire bail and a lid.
Campers, who cook over coals use camp ovens, which are dutch ovens with
integral legs about 2 inches long. The dutch oven is readily available
in several different sizes from about 5 inches in diameter to 16 inches
(I have heard of even larger sizes, but am not sure where they may be
purchased). The sides of the oven are slightly tapered. The depth of the
oven may vary also.
The lid of a camp oven is slightly domed and has a flange at its
circumference. Coals may be placed on top of the oven to allow baking.
Dutch ovens may be stacked with the coals on top of the bottom oven
providing bottom heat for the one on top.
Pictures of a dutch oven are available at

I am not associated with Lodge Manufacturing Company except as a user of
some of their products.
