Re: inflatable foam pads

Here's another point of view.

I've tried all kinds of self-inflating and non-self-inflating pads and think
they're OK, but I think there's something better.

I have a U.S. Army issue air mattress that I obtained a number of years ago
from one of those military supply catalogs (U.S. Cavalry, I think). This is a
tough, heavy green rubber inflatable one-person air mattress. It is coutour
shaped, like a mummy bag, has lengthwise seams dividing it up into 6 "columns"
(sort of like the kind of air mattress for swimming pool use), but is full
length. It has an internal insulating layer on one side. (True to Army
tradition, the "sleeping" side is marked "TOP" in big, black letters.) Rolled
up it is about 4 inches in diameter by about 16 inches. Inflating it takes
about 30-40 breaths.

This is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on, bar none. I feel
it is an order of magnitude more comfortable than any foam pad.
