With all due respect, your Council Executive was betraying his own prejudices
rather than speaking "Scouting". Everyone, in truth, brings their own
strengths and weaknesses to this program. Hopefully their strengths help
boys and their weaknesses (at least in some cases other than alcoholism for
example) can even be instructive. But to say that men are examples and women
are nurturers bespeaks a prejudice on the part of the speaker. It is
reminiscent of certain religious comments, but has no real place in Scouting.
All leaders are examples in one way or another. The fact that a woman gives
birth is not an example, the fact that she wears her uniform correctly is.
The fact that a man is a plumber is not an example, the fact that he give
freely of his time for others (the boys) is.
